WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY? Play Therapy makes use of your child's natural medium of communication, namely that of play. Children express themselves and explore their feelings and their experiences through play. Children often find it difficult to verbally express what they are thinking or feeling. Instead they find it much easier to communicate these through their play. Play Therapy therefore offers a way to assist children using play to express their feelings and make sense of difficult life experiences. WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM PLAY THERAPY? Children are sometimes faced with difficult life experiences which they might struggle to cope with or understand. Losing a loved one; witnessing a burglary; being involved in an accident or experiencing a change in the family unit through divorce or remarriage may result in children feeling overwhelmed and confused. Following such an experience your child may show emotional distress in any of the following ways: - Withdrawal
- Inability to concentrate at school
- Nightmares
- Wetting and soiling
- Clingy behaviour
- Angry outbursts
- Mood swings
- Changes in behaviour
HOW CAN PLAY THERAPY HELP? Play Therapy can help your child overcome a difficult experience. By meeting with me in the play room your child can through the safety of play explore and express their difficulties. Just as an adult would go to Counseling to talk about their difficulties, children recreate what has happened to them through the stories that emerge from their play. By working with your child through play, I can help your child explore what happened and make sense of their experience. Through this play in a safe and supportive environment your child can find relief from difficult feelings and seek resolution. This usually results in the decrease of symptoms and an improvement in behaviour. Home Connect With Your Kids Contact Me Rates |
